In the example here, I added a third leaf to one of the teal stalks to break the symmetry a bit.

The crescent moon and the asymmetrical third leaf finish the fabric layer of this art quilt.

see what happens: SYMBOL STUDY

Explore possible personal symbols and potential meaning.

1. Draw a small circle in the center of a page in a sketchbook or on a piece of printer paper (or even the back of an envelope).

2. Divide the rest of the page into quarters. Label the sections “Significance," “Sketch," “Story," and “Similar."

3. Write the name of a possible symbol in the circle. Consider ideas from the possible personal symbols list.

4. Fill in each section as follows.

■Significance: Make a list of possible meanings for this symbol. Nothing is too obvious or too farfetched. One idea may lead to another and another. Make note of anything that enters your mind. Consider what themes the symbol could suggest.

■Sketch: Draw a simple outline of the symbol. Sketch a few variations. (If you want more ideas, try a Google image search.)

■Story: Write a few lines about your personal connection to this image. What event does it remind you of? What feelings does it evoke? This is where you may surprise yourself with memories or ideas that don’t seem related to the symbol. Be open to those unexpected connections.

■Similar: List or sketch other possible symbols related to these ideas.
